IIT Indore contributed the design and development of Low cost Simrol Model toilet (named after the village where the Institute is located)for which the institute is awarded under Swacchata Ranking by MHRD. This case study was published in Empirical Journal as part of Unnat Bharat. This initiative is led by the School of Humanities. This societal outreach has helped the Social awareness,health and environmental facets of Simrol Grampanchayat in Madhya Pradesh.

IIT Palakkad along with Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi, conducted a two day workshop on 20th and 21st of September 2019 for Annular Solar Eclipse viewing. This workshop was attended by more than 40 school students from 5 different local schools and 3 local colleges. As a part of this workshop, interesting information on astronomy and cosmology were shared among the participants. Further, a hands-on session on building a telescope for observation and measurement of these events was held.

Clean Energy and Clean Water Campaign was organized on 2nd October for the students of Government Higher Secondary School, Agali. In Clean Energy program, the students were given solar lamp kits and helped them to make their own solar powered study lamps which they can use even during power outages. The clean water program demonstrated cost effective water purification methods for households. The vision of this campaign was to encourage the students to adopt clean and sustainable practices.

Plastic Free Village Campaign was organized as part of Gandhi Jayanti Celebration. Students visited 400 households, collected their plastic waste, and distributed pamphlets on how to effectively segregate the solid waste. The plastic free village campaign was organized in collaboration with Suchitwa Mission, Government of Kerala. The collected plastic was then taken by the Clean Kerala Company Limited, a main distributor of segregated plastics for road construction.

IIT Palakkad conducted Science Quest- a 10 day residential science camp from 15th to 24th of May 2019 in memory of Late Prof. M. C. Valsa Kumar, former Professor of Physics and Dean Student Affairs at IIT Palakkad. Thirty students were selected from schools across Kerala. The camp was inaugurated by Padma Shri Prof. S. Sivaram, INSA Senior Scientist at IISER Pune. The goal of the camp was to instil a spirit of inquiry and critical thinking, and love for science and mathematics in students.

IIT Palakkad conducted a residential camp, Vigyan Jyoti for 30 selected girls students from various schools in the Palakkad educational district for three weeks. Prof. Rohini Godbole, IISc Bangalore inaugurated the camp on 29th April, 2018. The aim of the camp was to create awareness among the students about possible career avenues in science and technology, and to generate excitement and interest about science/ engineering among the girls.

National Science Day 2018 was celebrated at IIT Palakkad on 28th February, 2018. As a part of this celebration, around 60 students from nearby schools were invited to the IIT campus and fun filled experiments, puzzles, and lecture sessions were organised for them. Various prizes were given to the best performing students in different events.

IIT Jammu has conducted a Skill Development Training Program on Enhancement of Employability Skills to the Diploma Mechanical Engineers of Jammu and Kashmir at jagti campus. In this three-week-long Program (July 01 2019 to July 20 2019), 35 students registered for the hands-on training which focused on topics such as CAD modeling, Machining Practice (L&M), CNC Programming, 3D Printing, Circuit Design and Applications, FRP and Plastics and other application-oriented sessions.

A two-day workshop was organized by the INDIAN ARMY and IIT JAMMU for the army school children in the border districts (Rajouri & Poonch) of J&K as part of Sadhbhavana initiative. Interesting Science experiments based on sensors, embedded systems, electric motors were demonstrated. Students had hands-on experience on how to design an electric generator and electric motor based on Faraday's law. Science Kits were distributed to the schools to continue their experimentation after the workshop.

Academic Year: 2023-2024

Organization of workshops and programs for community engagement has been the culture of IIT Jodhpur. Year 2023-24 made a significant impact on the society through these programs, inside IIT and in the villages. The focus was on education, livelihood, water and health.

  1. Community Strengthening Program: The Community Strengthening Program, is implemented across 11 districts of western Rajasthan under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (Scheme under the MOE), focused on various training sessions on livelihood and education at school level facilitated by Participating Institutions (PIs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Key highlights of the program include:
    • Skill Development: Training sessions were conducted to enhance the skills of individuals residing in the target communities under the adopted villages under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan as well as within the purview of DST STI-hub project (under Scheduled Caste Sub plan of the SEED division) at IIT Jodhpur. This included imparting vocational skills tailored to local needs, thereby empowering community members with valuable expertise as well as teachers in rural government and private schools in rural areas.
    • Rope Making and Products: Specialized training sessions were held to teach rope making techniques and the utilization of rope-based products. This initiative aimed to promote sustainable livelihoods and economic independence within the communities.
    • Clay-Based Water filter Making: Training sessions were organized to educate community members on clay-based water purification methods and their applications. This initiative sought to address water scarcity challenges prevalent in the region, promoting access to clean and safe drinking water.
    • Creation of Women Self-Help Groups: Women empowerment was emphasized through the establishment of self-help groups across the districts. These groups served as platforms for women to collaborate, share resources, and undertake collective initiatives for socioeconomic advancement.
  2. Skill Development and GPDP Interaction Subject matter experts engaged in spreading awareness on Sustainable Development Goals (LSDG) initiatives and facilitated interactions regarding the Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP). Key features of this activity include:
    • Expert Visits to Villages: Subject experts (from the pool of UBA-RCI Associated faculty members from IIT Jodhpur) visited villages to disseminate information about LSDG programs and foster discussions on village development plans. This initiative aimed to promote community participation in decision-making processes and align development efforts with local needs.
  3. Gram Sabha on Republic Day, 26th January 2023 Gram Sabhas were organized by Participating Institutions on Republic Day, providing a platform for discussions among villagers, Sarpanch (village head), and officials. This event aimed to promote grassroots democracy, facilitate dialogue on community issues, and foster collaborative problem-solving.
  4. Two-Day Workshop on Leveraging UBA for LSDGs A joint workshop organized by the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur (IITJ) and UNICEF on 13th-14th October 2023 focused on orientation towards Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) and its alignment with Local Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGs). The workshop aimed to enhance stakeholders' understanding of UBA's role in fostering sustainable development at the grassroots level. Here participants from Churu, Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Sirohi, Pali, Nagaur, Barmer, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jhunjhunun and Jodhpur participated in large numbers. Almost more that 150 participants from all of the above district mentored by UBA-RCI IIT Jodhpur participated enthusiastically. This was first evern national workshop on Localization of SDGS under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (Scheme of MOE, Government of India).
  5. Plastic Free campus campaign : A volunteering program on a clean campus theme was organized by the UBA with the help of service minded volunteers , students and residents of IIT Jodhpur under CETSD.
  6. Doing by Learning : Mathematics Lab has been installed at the Government School in Sultana village, Jaisalmer, through the collaborative efforts of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) under the Centre for Emerging Technology and Sustainable Development (CETSD). This initiative, titled "Doing by Learning," is aimed at enhancing mathematics education within the school.
  7. On 16, 17 & 18th December 2023 international conference named ‘ARAVALLI’ CONFERENCES: INTERNATIONAL GROUP OF CONFERENCES ‘ARAVALLI’ was organized by the joint collaboration of UBA RCI IIT Jodhpur and UBA Participating Institute SETH GYANIRAM BANSIDHAR PODAR COLLEGE, Nawalgarh

EWOK is a registered society in Mandi district (Registered under the H.P Societies Registration Act 2006 (Registration No.28)) working with the mission to assist women, farmers and their families in increasing livelihood especially through self-employment.

IIT Mandi has contributed to EWOK’s mission, in turn helping the local society as follows:

  • 2 FPCs registered and under incubation by EWOK & IIT Mandi. Supported by NABARD grant for 3 years. Currently working with 150 active farmers (women & men). Farmers have received additional income from the following activities:
    • EWOK & IIT Mandi are jointly promoting farmer producer companies (FPC) as NABARD appointed POPI. FPCs are now launching products like nutritious Himalayan walnuts, Buransh juice, pickles from indigenous ingredients etc under the brand name Him soul.
    • Currently about 100 farmers are cultivating and earning well from aromatic plants on lands otherwise abandoned due to wild animal menace. This initiative started as Collaboration between IIT Mandi Medicinal Plant Lab and EWOK in 2018.
    • Since 2019 more than 30 farmers are cultivating higher altitude herbs and selling to prominent pharma companies. This is another collaborative effort between EWOK & IIT Mandi Medicinal Plant Lab.
    • EWOK registered farmers got training for the cultivation of aromatic plants, high altitude herbs and herbal infusion from IIT Mandi Medicinal Plant Lab.
  • IIT Mandi has been continuously providing support to EWOK in terms of infrastructure for organizing monthly pop-up markets, a platform allowing women self-help groups to sell local delicacies and handmade products to the IIT Mandi community.
  • IIT Mandi has provided space to EWOK for installing essential oil distillation unit allowing farmers to add value and earn well.
  • IIT Mandi also extends support to EWOK by providing space for holding training, network facilities; administrative & financial advice for EWOK related
