Academic Departments

Bioscience & Bioengineering

The focus group of Biology was started in 2015 with the PhD program in Biology. In 2017, we started the PG degree in M.Tech in Bioscience and Bioengineering and the focus group of Biology got the status of the “Department of Bioscience and Bioengineering”. From 2018, we initiated a UG degree program, B.Tech in Biotechnology. In 2019, there was a major curriculum revision and we revived our previous UG and PG programs as B.Tech in Bioengineering and M.Tech in Bioengineering, respectively. Department also initiated a M.Tech-Ph.D dual degree program in the year 2020.

In Jan '2018, the department moved from the transit campus (MBM, Ratanada) to the permanent campus (Karwar). The department was temporarily housed in the second floor of the chemistry department building. Recently, in 2022, the department completely moved its laboratories and office premises to the new BSBE building at the permanent campus of IITJ.

The Department aspires to build a unique academic and research ecosystem that enables sustainable development of human resource capacity and technological solutions in healthcare, renewable energy, food and environment. We provide state-of-the-art domain knowledge and training to understand biological systems as well as innovative Bio-Tech solutions for applications in medical and environmental engineering domains. These include biofuels, diagnostics, therapeutics, smart healthcare devices.

The Department currently has 16 Faculty members with expertise ranging from fundamental research to application sciences. These include the areas of brain science, inflammation and immunity, neuronal protein quality control, microtubule biology, tumour biology, molecular microbiology, environmental biotechnology, genomics, plant functional genomics, computational, structural and systems biology, nanomedicine and biomaterials engineering, etc. The Department has organized itself into nine thematic areas including cell and molecular physiology, neuroscience & neuroengineering, biomaterials & tissue engineering, genomics & systems biology, environmental biotechnology, molecular microbiology, biophysics, molecular motors & cell motility, and computational biology & bioinformatics. The Department faculty members are also affiliated to the School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AIDE), Centre for Emerging Technologies for Sustainable Development (CETSD) and interdisciplinary research platforms smart healthcare (IDRPSH) that provide avenues and platforms for extensive trans-disciplinary interactions of the faculties and students from diverse disciplines in academic and research programs.

Chemical Engineering

The inception of Chemical Engineering Department at IIT Jodhpur took place in the year 2020 with the admission of first batch of undergraduate students and postgraduate students in four different academic programs (B.Tech, M.Tech., Ph.D., and M.Tech.-Ph.D. Dual degree). Vision is to become a globally recognized department of chemical engineering through its contribution in emerging and demand-driven areas with multidisciplinary approach. Through the academic programs, the department is making a conscious effort to establish itself as a leading institute in a new genre of chemical engineering education, in line with national education policy. The program involves foundational courses, emerging areas and specializations such as process engineering intelligence, molecular engineering and sustainability. With Industry 4.0 transforming the chemical industry, AI and IOT for chemical engineering forms an integral part of the curriculum. It is full of opportunities and flexibility for the students. Department has active collaboration with industries and academia world-wide.

Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry was formally established in the year 2015 at IIT Jodhpur. The Department offers M.Sc. (2 Yrs), M.Sc.(Chemistry) - M.Tech. (Materials Engineering) with specialization (4 Yrs), BS in Chemistry with Specialization (4 years) and Ph.D. programs. In addition, it offers core and elective courses in chemistry and allied areas for undergraduate B. Tech. Engineering Students of the Institute. The Department of Chemistry at IIT Jodhpur is striving to be acknowledged for excellence in teaching, research and outreach, at a distinctive locus of science and technology. Research is carried out in all major areas of chemical sciences. It has started its journey of making technology contributions in new materials for energy solutions, environmental remediation, water and healthcare. Also, fundamental research in the areas of Chemical Reaction Dynamics, Computational Biophysics, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance techniques, Organic Synthetic methods, organometallic chemistry, Main Group Chemistry, Nanomaterials, Quantum Chemistry and Quantum Information are being carried out in the department.

Civil & Infrastructure Engineering

The Department of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, IIT Jodhpur was established in January 2020 and started academic programs in the year 2020-2021. The Civil and infrastructure industry has undergone profound changes in recent years due to rapid urbanization and increasing quality of life that demand reliable and intelligent infrastructure systems. The new-age designs and innovations in the civil and infrastructure industry can only be driven by a group of engineering graduates having multidisciplinary training and a sound understanding of emerging technologies. With this viewpoint, the department offers unique programs that incorporate and integrate the elements of conventional civil engineering with advanced transformative technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), cyber-physical-systems (CPS), digital twins (DT), and automated management and information systems. Additionally, a major thrust is also planned on the design, implementation, and maintenance of large-scale integrated infrastructure systems across different domains. The focus areas of the department includes Energy and Environment, Building Sciences, Safety, and Services, Applications of AI, IoT, and CPS in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, Smart and Integrated Infrastructure, Urban Architecture and Planning, Construction Technology and Management, Transportation Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulic and water resources Engineering, and Engineering Geology.

Computer Science and Engineering

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering was established in the year 2015. The department offers two B.Tech. Programs (B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science), two M.Tech. Programs (M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, M.Tech in Artificial Intelligence), two M.Tech-Ph.D dual degree programs (M.Tech-Ph.D in Computer Science and Engineering, M.Tech-Ph.D in Artificial Intelligence), Executive M.Tech in Artificial Intelligence (for working professionals), and PhD Program in Computer Science and Engineering. The department has various research labs such as VANET lab, Language Technologies and Knowledgement Management Lab, Systems and Software Lab, Networks and IoT Lab, Theoretical Computer Science Lab, Visual Interaction and Understanding Lab, Cognitive and Social Analytics Lab, Trusted AI and Biometrics Lab, and Samsung AR-VR Innovation Lab. The department is driven by its commitment to excel in the research and development of next-generation technologies. The department has active collaborations with Industry and Academia in the thrust areas such as AI, Information Security, Networking, Computer Vision, and Cyber-Physical Systems.

Electrical Engineering

The Department of Electrical Engineering focuses on imparting quality education and preparing students to face the future technological challenges. The vision of the Department is to enhance the research environment and to innovate in pedagogy to address the challenges of socio-economic and human resource development. The Department is committed to engage in high quality research by Faculty Members and Students, and in the pursuit of excellence in teaching.

The Department offers B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering with broad range of major and minor specializations and four state-of-the-art M.Tech. program in Sensors and Internet of Things (SIoT), Cyber Physical Systems (CPS), Intelligent Communication Systems (ICS) and Intelligent VLSI Systems (IVS). M.Tech. IVS (Executive) is also offered to working professionals.

The Department also runs dual degree (M.Tech. + Ph.D.) programs in Intelligent Communication Systems, Sensors and Internet of Things (SIoT), Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) and Intelligent VLSI Systems (IVS) as well as Ph.D. program with a broad range of specialization covering detailed aspects of Microelectronics, Signal Processing, Communication, Microwave & Photonics, Power systems, Control systems, etc. The Department is also starting a new Executive MTech Program in Intelligent VLSI Systems (for working professionals) from July 2022.

Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics is dedicated to advancing the fields of pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. Our vision is to emphasize both the fundamental principles of core mathematics and the foundational concepts essential for analyzing key principles applied in cutting-edge technologies. Since its establishment, the department has been actively engaged in research across various critical areas of mathematics.

Mechanical Engineering

Since its establishment in 2015, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Jodhpur has been dedicated to cultivating a vibrant academic and research environment. Our primary focus lies in sustainable human resource development and the pursuit of technological solutions that shape the future. Driven by a commitment to excellence, we have continually evolved our curriculum to seamlessly integrate design thinking with a robust foundation in Mechanical Engineering. Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at IIT Jodhpur was established in 2017, and it is committed to providing high-quality education and conducting research in the broad field of Materials Engineering. The Department continuously strives for excellence in teaching and research through innovative pedagogy, curriculum development, interdisciplinary projects, and active collaborations with industries, R&D labs, and academia. Our goal is to enable students to think independently and equip them with relevant skill sets, encouraging graduates to innovate and address present-day materials challenges to meet the country's needs.
Currently, the Department offers M.Tech., M.Tech.-Ph.D. dual degree, and Ph.D. programs. Its teaching and research activities cover four major streams: structural materials, functional materials, computational materials engineering, and process metallurgy. From structural materials to semiconductors, we seek to understand the processing, composition, structure, properties, and performance of materials to derive novel, effective, and sustainable alternatives. Efforts are underway to introduce advanced concepts such as smart materials, additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and sensor materials to solve interdisciplinary problems requiring materials engineering knowledge.

Physics

The primary focus of the Physics department at IIT Jodhpur is on conducting visible research in fundamental Physics and its practical applications. Faculty members engage in research across various domains, including Astrophysics, Condensed Matter Physics & Material Science, Particle Physics, Experimental and Theoretical Quantum Optics, Quantum Information, and Foundations of Quantum Mechanics. School of Management & Entrepreneurship (SME)

School of Liberal Arts (SoLA)

The School of Liberal Arts (SoLA) at IIT Jodhpur was established in 2022. It evolved from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), which had its inception in the year 2015. SoLA’s flagship program, which commenced in 2022, is the two-year MSc in Computational Social Sciences (CSS) with a specialization in two tracks – Computational Economics and Computational Sociology. The School’s doctoral program has more than 60 PhD scholars are working in the areas of literature, linguistics, cultural studies, theatre, performing arts, sociology, economics, philosophy, psychology, public health and allied disciplines. To promote a more nuanced dialogue between STEM and social sciences, the school also offers interdisciplinary cross-institute courses for engineering students at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. Currently the School has more than 24 faculty members including Professor of Practice, Adjunct and Affiliated Professors/Faculty who are distinguished academics whose practice and research bridge the gaps between the humanistic, the social, the environmental, and the technological domains.

School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AIDE)

School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AIDE) is an transdisciplinary School charged with a mission to be at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science research - theoretical, application driven and locally relevant for regional needs; play a leading role in the delivery of AI and Data Science education in the formal and informal sectors at all levels; and become a coveted destination for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science technology development and entrepreneurship.

AIDE School offers research and education in a wide array of emerging and challenging areas of foundational AI & DS, and AI & DS Applications.

AIDE School has, as on 26th Feb 2024, 59 faculty including those affiliated from eleven different academic units across different disciplines.

AIDE School currently has four Centres of Excellence namely, Brain Science and Applications, Mathematical and Computational Economics, Intelligent Infrastructure, AI Based Precision Healthcare.

School of Design

The School of Design was formally established in 2023 at IIT Jodhpur. The School offers a Master of Design (M.Des.) Program with specialization in XR Design (2 Yrs). The M.Des. XR Design is a pathbreaking program in the emerging area of Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Virtual Reality (VR) experience design that will address the growing need of the industry to create useful, engaging, and socially relevant experiences that extend the real world or live entirely in the virtual, in areas such as healthcare, entertainment, and education.

The MDes in XR Design program's curriculum focuses on hands-on learning, equipping students with technical mastery over the VR/AR/MR design and development tools, 3D modeling and animation, user interface design, and more.

The School of Design strives to develop the skills to empathise with users, identify needs, and iterate on innovative solutions. In addition, the school offers elective courses in Product Design, Human-computer Interaction, and allied areas for undergraduate and Postgraduate engineering students of the Institute.

Centre for Emerging Technology for Sustainable Development (CETSD)

Center for Emerging Technologies for Sustainable Development (CETSD) is the center at IIT Jodhpur which puts on the ground viable solutions through schemes combining the technology, funding, management, social, data and environmental touchstones. Communities, industries, government, students, academic institutes, individuals, and non-governmental organizations are a part of this trans-disciplinary center. Center for Emerging Technologies for Sustainable Development is the scientific social responsibility arm of IIT Jodhpur.

Vision

The vision of CETSD is “To be a partner in tapping the potential of emerging technologies for creating a sustainable and prosperous future India”.

Mission

There are five major broad missions on which CETSD is working. These are as follows: 

1. To provide a platform for non-governmental and governmental collaborators to work together to apply emerging technologies for finding and implementing solutions towards achieving SDG targets. 
2. To help develop scientific temper societies to understand technologies that are sustainable or technologies that are using sustainability aspects. 
3. To innovate solutions and strategies towards challenges in location specific problems related to energy use, education, water management, infrastructure, traditional livelihood skills, and health. 
4. To perform applied research in areas such agriculture, environment, healthcare, waste management, pollution, livelihood, knowledge dissemination and rural development. 
5. To make synergistic policy suggestions to handle issues in energy use, agriculture, water management, local pollution in a region and its influences on health.

CETSD is the Center for Rural Development and Technology (CRDT) at IIT Jodhpur in line with the decree of the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (now Ministry of Education) to be set at all IITs. It therefore partners with RuTAG Center IIT Delhi (from the Office of PSA )and UBA program, CRDT, IIT Delhi.

It is also a Science and Technology Innovation hub (STI Hub from March 2023) after the grant support from DST-SEED Division.

Centre for Technology Foresight and Policy (CTFP)

The Center for Technology Foresight and Policy (CTFP) came into existence on 14 January 2020. The center plans to focus on evolving areas of technology - such as metaverse, quantum technologies, and the future of cities – with an aim to provide future roadmaps and policy recommendations. The center also plans to promote foresight and its methodologies in the public and private sectors. The CTFP has launched certain focus groups, such as the Future of Cities group, to act as a hub of interdisciplinary research. The center also launched a Masters (research) program and completed the selection process for the academic year 23-24. The center is also geared for launching the PhD program from the academic year 2024-25.

Centre for Research and Development of Scientific Instruments (CRDSI)

Centre for R&D of Scientific Instruments (CRDSI) at IIT Jodhpur has been established to provide the service of the state-of-the-art equipment to the research community of IIT Jodhpur and also to the researchers from other academic Institutions, R&D Laboratories and Industries spread throughout India. The Centre has the mandate of carrying out training programme on various characterisation methodologies for the student community as well as for the Industry and R&D personnels.

The centre also emphasises development of indigenous instruments for research and teaching purposes.

Recently, centre acquired the following equipment and started giving services to the research community:

1. Inductively Coupled Plasma with Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS) (Agilent, Model: 7850 ICP-MS)
2. Fluoresce Applied Cell Sorting (FACS) (BD Biosciences, Model: Discover S8)
3. Confocal Fluorescent Correlation Spectrometer (Holmarc-FCS)
4. Modular Compact Rheometer (Anton Parr, Model: MCR 702e)

The equipment that will be installed shortly at the Centre:

1. X-ray fluoresce (XRF) Spectrometer (Malvern Panalytical, Model: Epsilon 4) along with sample preparation unit
2. Powder X-ray diffractometer (Malvern Panalytical, Model: Empyrean)

High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (HRTEM) (Thermo Fisher, Model:Talos-F200i) along with the sample preparation unit for materials science research.

Centre for Education & Technology for Education (CETE)

Education institutions and policymakers around the globe have begun to embrace immersive teaching-learning technologies that will enable most students to attain optimal educational achievement levels. Centre for Education & Technology for Education (CETE) works towards research and delivery, services and training, and social outreach in the area of education technology and educational innovation.

The scope of this Center includes

• Educational Services: Pedagogical Innovation in blended and hybrid education;
• Professional Development Continuing Education with upgradation of knowledge and pedagogical skills of Engineering Faculty
• Technology Development for Teaching-Learning needs, Assessment and Evaluation, Laboratory / Hands-on Instructions
• Instructional Design

The Center has started its PhD program from Academic Year 2023-24, and is scheduled to start Integrated Teachers Education Program (ITEP) from Academic Year 2024-25.

Rishabh Centre for Research and Innovation in Clean Energy (RCRICE)

IIT Jodhpur, in collaboration with Rishabh Instruments Limited and Ivaan Foundation, has established the Rishabh Centre for Research and Innovation in Clean Energy (RCRICE). The primary objective of this centre is to facilitate both basic and applied research, utilizing the knowledge base of the faculty and researchers at IIT Jodhpur. Particular emphasis is given to the innovation-driven approach to next-generation energy technology challenges. Additionally, the centre aims to engage with other academic institutions, technology centres, startups, and industries across the country to address the real technological challenges in energy domains, such as green and renewable energy, power generation and storage, microgrids for distributed applications, etc. The centre's research and technology roadmap is designed to promote collaborative research through the MS program in Energy Technology, with the ultimate goal of developing new and innovation-driven technologies for future applications.

The term "innovation" refers to the creation of new or improved products, services, processes, systems, organizational structures, or business models that generate value for customers and financial returns for the company. Innovation involves the implementation of novel or enhanced offerings and the conversion of inventions into value-added products, services, or systems that benefit the end user.

The MS Programs in Energy Technology offered by IIT Jodhpur have a unique focus on fostering innovation and producing a skilled pool of Energy Technologists in the country. The program aims to develop globally competitive Energy Technologies that can address both current and future energy challenges. This program integrates relevant elements of Energy Technology and emphasizes translational R&D, innovation, technology management, and entrepreneurship. This approach is intended to facilitate the creation of deployable techniques, technologies, devices, and systems in the domain of Energy Technology. Thus, this program is highly multidisciplinary in nature and is one of the crucial aspects of addressing the technological gaps/challenges.

The Division of Interdisciplinary Research (IDRD) has six (6) Interdisciplinary Research Platforms (IDRPs). The objective of the division is to create an environment to support IDRPs by developing an ecosystem for competitive and cutting-edge research. Vision of individual platform is as follows:

1. RMS: Advance the Interdisciplinary fields of robotics and mobility systems through development in modelling, control, multimodal perception, communication, AI/ML, and energy management system to solve technological challenges in civil and military sectors to develop state-of-the-art applications. Projects, PhD and MTech program are Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
2. DH: To create a flourishing and innovative interdisciplinary research platform that attends to knowledge production, circulation, and dissemination in the digital age with a focus on epistemological questions and ontological positionalities. Projects, Ph.D. and Master program are KPIs.
3. IoT: An interdisciplinary research and innovation ecosystem for IoT enabled technologies to serve national and global needs. Projects, PhD and AIOT Fab are KPIs.
4. SST: To grow as a Centre of Excellence for Research and Learning in Space Science & Technology. Projects, Ph.D. and Related courses are KPIs.
5. SHC: Emerge as an Interdisciplinary platform achieving excellence in devising smart healthcare solutions for diagnostics, therapeutics, and remote healthcare through multidisciplinary research and teaching, bringing disruption in the conventional healthcare regime.
